About SDGs
(Sustainable Development
Goals)
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
were
adopted at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit held at UN Headquarters in New
York in September 2015.
The SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169 targets, including the
pursuit of peace, the eradication of poverty, and the preservation of the global
environment, and are a collection of aspirations and action guidelines shared by the
international community for the way humanity wants to be by 2030.
As one of the principles underlying these goals, the preamble states, "As we embark on this collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind. "
Formulating the SDGs Guidelines for Action
Ship management companies support the world's maritime logistics and meets the demand of Charterers and Shippers/Receivers by maintaining the seaworthiness and the cargoworthiness of vessels entrusted by shipowners, complying with all laws and regulations.
As a DOC*1 holder, the ship management company manages the ship in accordance with the SOLAS
Convention*2.
*1 Document of Compliance, a certificate that the ship management company's Safety Management
System (SMS) complies with the requirements of the ISM Code (International Safety Management
Code)
*2 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.
Shipowners have also set goals to achieve a sustainable society, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing new ships that comply with environmental regulations, and ship management companies are expected to support such efforts by shipowners.
Based on the role of ship management companies in the maritime industry, we have developed action guidelines incorporating the perspective of the SDGs and have organized the key issues (materiality) and corresponding SDGs targets.

Prevention of marine accidents, cargo damage, and occupational accidents
Under the requirements of the SOLAS Convention (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea), we operates a Safety Management System (SMS) built in accordance with the ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) and work to prevent maritime accidents, industrial incidents, and cargo damage in cooperation with our overseas offices. In 2012, we established the Ship Safety Management Department with the aim of further developing our safety management system. The department analyzes trends in marine accidents, crew member injuries and illnesses, and equipment malfunctions, manages the status of PSC (Port State Control) inspections, and provides feedback to crew members. In addition, we work with a manning company located in Manila, Philippines, to provide crew members with pre-boarding training and improve their safety awareness.
We aim to achieve zero marine accidents and industrial accidents, and plan to disclose accident trends in our Sustainability Report and other documents.
Hold Safety Control Committee meetings.
The Safety Control Committee, led by the Ship Safety Management Department, meets regularly to analyze accidents and malfunctions, formulate measures to prevent recurrence, check the occurrence of malfunctions and the status of inspections by classification societies and PSC. Also, the committee hears requests for ship management from ship owners and operators, which are reflected in our management operations.
Creation of quarterly incident claim records
The causes of accidents, crew member injuries and illnesses, and cargo claims that occurred during the relevant period, as well as measures to prevent recurrence, are summarized and provide feedback to the managing vessels and manning agents every quarter.
Promotion of IT for ship management/Establishment of cyber security system
H&J Marine promotes the use of IT in ship management and establishes a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) that enables the continued management of ships being operated worldwide, even in the event of an emergency such as a natural disaster or the epidemic of infectious diseases, through the remote working and cloud-based management of ship operations.
We have also incorporated a cyber security manual into our Safety Management System (SMS) in accordance with IMO guidelines, appointed a ship IT manager, and conduct IT risk assessments.

2. Supporting Shipowners’ SDGs Policies
- ●Comply with and support Shipowners’ SDGs.
-
[Shipowners' Initiatives]
Prevention of Marine Pollution and Compliance with the MARPOL Convention / Compliance with the Ship Recycling Convention - New shipbuilding in compliance with environmental regulations / Support Program for seafarers to obtain maritime license
Complying with and supporting shipowner SDGs
As a management company, we comply with shipowners' policies on the SDGs and support their efforts by providing information on the latest environmental regulations and treaty developments.
[Shipowner initiatives related to the SDGs]
・ Prevention of Marine Pollution and Compliance with the MARPOL Convention
Emissions from ships are regulated by MARPOL 73/78 (Protocol of 1978 to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973), which has annexes that establish regulations for oil, chemicals, hazardous substances, sewage, waste, and exhaust gases, respectively.
・ Compliance with the Ship Recycling Convention
We are complying with the Ship Recycling Convention prior to the Convention‘s entry into force, and are creating, maintaining, and updating an Inventory of Hazardous Materials(IHM) that describes the quantity and location of hazardous materials contained on board ships. By managing chemical substances and waste throughout the life of the ship, we aim to ensure the safety of workers and reduce environmental impact during the shipbreaking of old ships.
・ Building new ships to meet environmental regulations
Periodic replacement of vessels to comply with environmental regulations.
・ Maritime license acquisition support for crew members
We have a program to support seamen to obtain a maritime license.
H&J MARINE supports shipowner‘s efforts as a management company
Provide information to ship owners concerning the latest environmental regulations and
trends in the market for new and second-hand vessels.
